Current State of IoT – IoT has Arrived
The Internet of Things has been going through its ups and downs during the last couple of years. After a ‘Gartner Hype Cycle’, ‘Peak of Inflated Expectations’ 3 years ago IoT went through a long ‘Trough of Disillusionment’ but is now climbing the ‘Slope of Enlightenment’ onto the ‘Plateau of Productivity’. The IoT era is finally here.
What changed is that much of the complexity has disappeared – it is just easier to develop IoT solutions today. While there are still many moving parts, major complexity issues have been addressed by the introduction of robust cloud-based IoT processing and data analytics platforms from leading cloud providers like AWS, Azure, and others. A growing number of IoT devices are also becoming available allowing for the development of overlay solutions. Finally, connectivity is becoming more accessible and more robust with the introduction of carrier-based connectivity solutions that are easily integrated with the cloud-based solutions. New connectivity solutions also offer broader deployment options including wireless battery powered sensors with a battery life of more than five years.
This does not mean that IoT is necessarily simple. There are still many moving parts (5-10) in any implementation demanding expertise or advanced knowledge plus substantial integration knowledge.
Macrosoft IoT Practice – Focusing on Client Solutions
When we at Macrosoft decided to establish an Internet of Things Integration practice we wanted to address our client’s business needs and implementation challenges. This includes anything from getting started in the IoT business with pilots and initial deployments to assistance on particular aspects of IoT, whether adding new devices and connectivity, implement IoT data solutions and analytics, or integrating with other business systems. To address all of these areas, we decided that starting each IoT SI project from ‘scratch’ was not the approach our clients needed.
What we instead did was to establish our growable reference architecture and implemented it in our lab. The current version of this architecture includes carrier-grade access and connectivity platform, a complete AWS IoT data and analytics implementation, app servers for web, Android and iPhone applications and a growing set of deployable IoT devices. We continue to enhance this platform with new devices, new connectivity methods, new data and analytics capabilities, and an underlying end-to-end management platform and more.
Using this approach, we can offer our clients an end-to-end IoT implementation customized for their needs and integrated with their existing business. While each engagement will be different, at the core, there is a truly tested and deployable end-to-end IoT solution handed over to the client fully implemented and ready for their use and operation. This is a growable platform that will serve as the foundation for the client’s IoT business.
In addition to this, we offer substantial analytics and data science expertise so that clients can use data derived from IoT and other business systems to create data-driven enterprise complete with applications for customers, business and operational functions.
Macrosoft IoT and Data Analytics Engagement Models – Implementing Data-Driven Business Models
We like to start each engagement with a phone meeting where we discuss client needs and opportunities and how IoT and Data Analytics can address these. Next step is an in-person meeting 2-4 hours, where we meet with client stakeholders and experts to solidify requirements and project milestones. Based on this we will create a multi-phase proposal starting with short time Proof of Concept and Pilots (typically complete in 3-6 weeks) followed by integration and deployments (another 6-12 weeks).
Initial Proof of Concepts or Pilots will include a complete end-to-end IoT solution – from device to application providing a demonstrable solution deployed on cloud platforms with real devices. After the Pilot stage, we will work with the customer on full deployment, data analytics and business integration parts of the projects. Our goal is to deliver full IoT projects ready for scaling in less than three months.
